Fuel pump rebuild

Post by dubdaze »

Hi, rebuilt the fuel pump, but it sounds like an erattic machine gun.... I have a feeling that the diaphram is not correctly screwed in... what is the correct setting for an SU fuel pump diaphram?

Erm,

Not sure - the last advice given me about the inners of an SU pump was "don't touch it!".

The points, yes - about 0.030 inch clearance (see Haynes), the diaphram's inside. That may be the cause - maybe it's pumping air/vapour?

Hello DD,
yes there is a procedure for fitting the diaphragms. If you would send me an E-Mail address to mine :- jwb808c@btinternet.com, I'll scan and send you the procedure.

diaphragm

Post by Willie »

The setting of the diaphragm takes up one and a half pages of the
Workshop Manual! "With the contacts spring blade swung to
one side and the eleven guide rollers in position around the armature
hold the magnet assembly in a horizontal position. The armature is
screwed inwards until the 'throw-over' ceases to operate, and then,
should be screwed back gradually, a sixth of a turn(or one hole) at a
time until when it is pushed in slowly and firmly the throw-over operates.
Then unscrew the armature a further two thirds of a turn(four of the six
holes). It goes on to state that it is essential to stretch the diaphragm
before the six securing screws are tightened.
