Timing chain cover with breather used with duplex chain

Post by philthehill »

The later timing chain cover used with the simplex timing chain tensioner and breather/oil separator can be used with a duplex chain but requires some modification.

Firstly the timing sensor holder needs to be removed which is held in place by a couple of spot welds which can be ground out and the holder removed. The dimple underneath the holder must be knocked out. The dimple can be seen in the top left corner of the 2nd photo.

The baffle around the breather/oil separator needs to be removed as it may foul the timing chain /sprockets. It is held in place by four spot welds which can be ground out and the baffle removed.

The breather/oil separator may foul the fan but the fan can be spaced out to clear using the appropriate fan spacer which can be obtained in various thicknesses.

Hi Phil

Thanks for providing the info on modifications require. I was aware of the need to knock out the dimple, but was not aware that the oil baffle needed to be modified / removed.
The 1275 engine I am putting into my traveller has a duplex chain and there was a problem with the oil separator, as this had been modified to allow a normally fitted fan to be used without spacers, but this modification was now leaking. This cover had not had the modification to the oil baffle, so had not undertaken that modification to the new cover.
During the installation of the new cover today, it was clear the oil baffle was too large and hit the sprocket. On checking the old cover, which still had the baffle, this would fit, but on inspecting the sprocket, it could be seem that the baffle had been rubbing on the sprocket.
A modification to remove most of the baffle was done and the cover now fits with no rubbing/fouling.

Thank again for pointing out the modifications required.

Hi Phil

on checking the breathing, the engine has a non vented rocker box cap. I assume this should be vented cap with the timing chain cover above.

Can you confirm

Thanks

The oil filler cap should be of the vented type when the engine has the oil separator/breather canister fitted - which on the 1098cc engine is fitted to the front cam follower access cover or on the MG Midget/Marina timing chain cover.

The rocker cover should not have a breather pipe when the oil separator/breather is utilised.

You can use a GFE6003 vented cap. There are plenty on ebay.
