Safety Video

Post by firedrake1942 »

A brilliant Road Safety video from late 1950's Oxford. Much 'shallow end of the gene pool' driving , even in those days. But apart from the Mr Cholmondley-Warner's narration, good for Minors and MO's too !

A Public Information film produced by the Ministry of Patronisation? Although the various points made about road-usage and the need for general improvement across the board were sound enough, the many obviously arranged 'near misses' had the overall effect of bringing the whole presentation into the realms of farce. Or were we all really so gullible in those days as to believe that the film was just a fly-on-the-wall record of a typical day in Oxford? If we were, then a glance at the credits rolling at the end of the film would soon dispel that illusion as there were more 'product placement' shots than in a whole season of Peter Kay's 'Car Share'. Good nostalgic fun to watch though - nice find Firedrake.

Bit earlier actually, the BFI listing further down the page says released '53.

I noted that even in '53, the voice over at the end in the Hospital Scene said 'Shortage of Nurses and beds...' and people try to make out it's a new thing....

Seemed to be lots of nurses around on my recent hospital stay. They all ran around typing things on I-pads and diving behind key pad protected doors if they thought you were trying to catch their attention.
The health care assistants seem to do all the hands on work these days. They were great.
