Front suspension

Post by bmcecosse »

First question - Is there any sensible reason why the left side front suspension upright has left hand threads ? I cannot for the life of me see the reasoning behind this ! Fair enough the hub nut being lh thread to prevent it trying to unscrew - but why the trunnions ?
Second Question - Is the Marina lower trunnion the same as the Minor lower trunnion ?

there's a simple answer to the threads - when you steer left it banks the car to the left. When you steer right it banks the car to the right.
Obviously this is only by a few mm (a millimetre is aprox 40 thou ;-) but otherwise steering one way would lower the front of the car and steering the other way would raise it.
If it was my call 60 years ago (ie. if I'd been born a hundred years ago) I would have been very tough to convince that the LH and RH thread was worthwhile.

Yes - exactly the raising/lowering in this case will be about 20 thou from lock to lock !! Just waste of money madness - all those spare parts etc. The maddening thing is - I knew I had two new bottom trunnion kits 'in stock' - of course they are both LH side - with LH thread !! And I need RH side.
So - back to question # 2 - is the Marina trunnion same as Minor trunnion - because there are some on ebay !!

I bought a bottom trunnion by mistake, as it turned out not to be for a minor, the thread looked the same but the pin that passes through it was offset. So although I can't say it was Marina, bottom trunnions can vary!

Yes - the picture on ebay looks like the cross pin is further out - will give fantastic negative camber though !!
