Stuck in 1st gear?

A question that was posed to me by a member of our branch:

Last weekend when competing in a 'road rally' they found that they could not get the gearbox to come out of 1st gear!

They asked me about this, but I said I had not come across it personally. Any ideas on what could be making it stick in 1st??

The car is a series 3 but has a 1098 engine and gearbox.

had that on my first turbo experiment when i worked out that 948'boxs are not upto much in the power stakes

Got stuck in first after a lot of hard local driving. From what i remember the first gear cog and a ring infront of it had warn badly and instead of sliding it twisted as it was moved and bound on the shaft..

Mine needed a new box (1098)

Emily's box is getting notchy into second after 15k miles and will need replacing soon

I think it can kind of go 'over - centre' when badly worn - big rebuild or find another box time !
