It's got some microblistering in the paint but she looks good from ten foot away, I bet the average eurobox won't look so good when they hit 60!

Oh yeah I've put new pin stripe on, looked naked without it, in future I might paint my spare wheels sage green along with the grill then put a birch grey stripe on it.

Re: 57 Saloon, rotten!
Beautifully symmetrical. I had to look hard to see it.

Yeah I thought make it bigger and space it equally, looks more like it's meant to be there!

Exactly right. Hiding in plain sight , almost as if it was meant for the 'optional upgrade to a central arm rest' (as if a minor would ever have had such a thing)

Re: 57 Saloon, rotten!
I'm thinking it might be time to fit a 1098 diff , I presume it's as easy as pulling the half shafts clear, swap the whole unit with a fresh gasket and putting the half shafts back in?

Re: 57 Saloon, rotten!
It is quite straightforward but you would also Need to renew the paper gaskets from the half shaft flanges and O rings - if it has them. The brake pipe is attached to the casing which can get in the way.

I believe in the process you will lose the fill plug since the 4.22 had the plug in the axle housing and the 4.55 has it in the differential case. Some fill through the vent, but most tip the car over a bit and fill by pulling a half shaft.

Re: 57 Saloon, rotten!
As I have posted before, I had this problem on replacing a diff for a 1957 and made a dipstick out of some welding wire so I did not overfill through the breather.

Re: 57 Saloon, rotten!
Ah never thought about the filling hole, that's why you forum experts are worth your weight in gold!
Is the fill level the same so I could engrave a mark in the casing before swapping to then make a dip stick as firedrake says?
