ignition light

Post by docgibbons »

my 1958 saloon is behaving a bit oddly. last night my red ignition light stayed on when i turned off the engine, and turned itself out when i turned on the ignition. it eventually returned to doing it the other way around, but this has happened twice now in the past few days, and i wondered whether it might be a faulty connection, or indicative of a problem. it's charging okay. any ideas?

Hello Doc,

it sounds as though the voltage regulator is sticking, and I suggest disconnecting the battery if the ignition light stays on when you stop. (Until you can verify and correct the problem.)

hi alec,
thanks for the tip. it had my local garage man scratching his head. any ideas on a cure? replacement part maybe? it's working normally at the moment, but this has happened a couple of times now.

hi alec,
had a word with ESM minors, and they concur with your diagnosis. they recommend giving it a good clean and see if that cures any problems with dirt/sticking, and if it doesn't fix it, replace the voltage regulator box. so we'll see if that does it.
