Gearbox oil.

Post by midget »

Bit of a long shot really,as I think it will be viewed as a daft question, but I have some Castrol Syntrans oil stored since I used to run Merc Sprinter Vans in the past. It is rated at 75W90, so is it suitable for the Midget box I am about to fit to my van please?
I am aware that the recommended oil was 20W50 as per the engine, but that was a long time ago, and this is a modern product.

Don’t use it.
The extreme pressure additive will eat into phosphor bronze contain within your box.

As above - you need to use engine oil. Recommendations in the workshop manual were either 30W, or 20W50, I believe.

Thanks for confirmation. It is a Midget 'box--I was under the impression that the phosphor bronze Bushes were replaced with needle rollers, or are there more PB parts in there? Not arguing---just interested. :)
