Air filter fouling wiper motor bracket
I have a 57 Minor with a 948 Engine and it had an oil-bath filter which i find a little obtrusive so I planned to change to the pot-style air filter fitted to later 948 Engines. When I fit the new assembly there is a very small clearance between the filter housing and the wiper motor mounting bracket which will probably have a touch condition with Engine movement. Can anyone tell me why this may be the case ? was there a revised position to the wiper motor bracket to accommodate the new air cleaner housing perhaps ?

Also there is another problem. The adaptor that joins the air cleaner housing to the carburettor doesnt quite match up so there is a leakage on the one side. Any ideas why the flange on my HS2 is asymmetrical ?

You seem to have the wrong connection between the air filter can and the carburettor. This would explain both of your issues.

Re: Air filter fouling wiper motor bracket
You now have the wrong air filter/carb/manifold combination.
Only the correct air cleaner(filter) will fit your carb/manifold combination.
The stub between carb and air filter is wrong and only suitable for the HS2 1 1/4" SU carb.
Fitting a HS2 1 1/4" SU carb may alleviate your problems and allow the use of the air filter currently fitted.
Fitting the later type manifold and SU carb will get around the problems much easier and is virtually a straight swop.

Re: Air filter fouling wiper motor bracket
Thanks very much Don and Phil. I think I may restore my old oil-bath filter as it will be too expensive to buy a carburettor, manifold etc. I'm surprised that there are differences in the carburettors on certain 948 variants. I thought the 948 induction system only changed when the Minor went to 1098.
Appreciate your input.

Re: Air filter fouling wiper motor bracket
The early 948cc Minors had the H1 SU carb fitted, later 948cc Minors had the HS2 carb fitted.
The two carbs are dimensionally different (not withstanding the inlet manifold differences) and that is why the later air filter you have fitted fouls the windscreen motor mounting bracket.
You could fit a pancake filter suitable for the original H1 SU carb, that would allow accessibility to the engine and not look out of place.
Link to HS2 SU carbs fitted to the both 948cc & 1098cc Minors.
