Re: engine number
Not sure about either of those. Assuming the original 948cc Minor engine is still fitted, the engine number should be either 9M-U-H (high compression) or 9M-U-L (low compression) followed by 6-digit number. Is there an engine number quoted on the V5 reg document? Does the cylinder block have '950' cast into it somewhere adjacent to the exhaust downpipe?

Re: engine number
The 1100 is indicative that it is 1098 originally. I don't recognise the engine no.
I cannot find it on this list
http://gerardsgarage.com/Garage/Tech/BM ... odesLO.htm
or this one
http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/news/news498.html
This what the engine no should be on.
Someone more expert will no doubt be along shortly....

Re: engine number
The 1100 on a thin aluminium plate, signifies a 1098cc engine capacity. There should be a raised casting number on the block. Can't help with the one stamped in it. As above the engine number is stamped into an aluminium strip, front left.

Re: engine number
I would suggest that the engine has been reconditioned and the number quoted is the reconditioning companies engine identification number.
A picture of the number and plate by the dip stick would be appreciated.

Re: engine number
The 1100 / 950 plate, where present, is usually on the manifold side of the engine. I think Phil is probably right, a recon engine but not gold or silver seal i.e. non- manufacturer

Re: engine number
Thank you for posting the photos.
The stamped 1100 plate is in its correct position on the N/S front of the engine block and not the O/S of the engine and is not near the dipstick.
The pipe adjacent to the 1100 plate is the engine breather pipe and not the dipstick.
The stamped number is the recon engine number. Do you have an invoice for the reconditioning of the engine in the vehicle history file?
For general consumption:- What ever vehicle you have it is most important to have a full record of what has been done to the vehicle and parts purchased for future reference.

Re: engine number
Thanks for that info Phil. Although it doesn't apply to me (yet!) it would never occur to me that a recon engine from an 'independent' source would have an alien number on it!

Re: engine number
If I was an engine reconditioner I would always ensure that my own serial number was stamped on the block so that if any problems occurred the engine could be identified as having been reconditioned by me otherwise any old engine could be returned.
My Oselli modified 1275cc Midget block and my Manx Racing 1275cc cylinder head have both got their unique identification numbers stamped on them.

Re: engine number
A good chance your engine was reconditioned by KAR engine services in Barnstaple.
