Top Trunnion bushes

Post by cuk »

Hi, 1971 Traveller 1098cc
Have to do the top trunnion rubber bushes. Is it just a matter of undoing split pin-castled nut drifting the pin off of the damper (which may be difficult) and replacing bushes, (leave a 0.02 clearence when re-assemble + tightening nut back up-after lowering the car first?
Thanks Paul.

Ignore the clearance measurement - it only applies to those Minors with top screwed damper/trunnion pins.
The plain damper pin stays in the damper arm.

Jack and secure the car under the chassis arms.
Put a jack under the outer end of the lower suspension arms.
Take the load off the torsion bar.
Knock back the tab washer, undo the nut and remove the large stepped washer.
Winkle out the first bush and twist the top trunnion off the damper pin. May take a bit of effort but it will twist off.
Remove 2nd bush.
Replace bushes and reassemble in reverse.
Make sure that the flexible brake pipe is not under strain when the top trunnion is released and the swivel swings away from the body - secure with a piece of rope.
Yes - tighten the damper pin nut when the car is back on the ground after a couple of pressing downs of the wing to settle the suspension.
If fitting poly bushes smear the bush in red or white grease on assembly.
A 30 min job either side at most.
I would advise that you replace the swivel rubbers at the same time.
