You want an appreciation of German culture from the little englander, brexit-voting, Daily Mail / Sun reading splendid isolation loving, vacuous British, with their very narrow backward looking weltanschauung? There are some good modern German films very late at night on Channel 4 but that's about it! It seems that we are destined forever to re-run the WW2 staples all the while chanting 'one world cup and two world wars' whilst not appreciating that the ties that bind the EU have made the possibility of such conflicts, fuelled by petty nationalism, all but unthinkable.

Sorry just afflicted and thoroughly depressed by the hideous modern brand of Weltschmerz.

Chin up, What!
I would be interested to know what films the Channel 4 show.

There is an interesting and provocative comment from Henning Wehn when talking about Football Songs, the "two world wars and one world Cup" in which he says
" I don't understand this song. I have been following Football a Long time and I don't remember the US americans ever winning the world Cup "

Henning is a master and gives the absolute lie about Germans and sense of humour. Last german film I saw on C4 was in fact a WW2 one The Bunker, with that much parodied rant. My favourite parody is the trip to Yorkshire

National stereotypes eh? Twenty odd years ago I was working in the old Czechoslovakia..before the country divided, and was amused to find that the Czech people told jokes about the Slovaks that were identical to the English- Irish jokes that were around at the time...
'How many Slovaks does it take to change a lightbulb ' etc.
I think every part of the world does the same because people are fundamentally the same, regardless of creed or colour.

That is partly the Problem that english speaking audiences seem to only want to sse Germany in a war context. It is a cliche of course. Just like the humour that anglo-saxons believe middle europeans do not have.

Have a look at this, as an example of an everyday Scene. The language will perhaps not be understood but the humour Comes over ?

Having last lived in Germany in the early 70's I am stunned by how much I understood of that. There was a really good East / West Germany 70's/ 80s series on C4 recently.

Do they still have Meiselmenchen in the adverts on TV ?

PB that pearl grey 1957 is lovely. Really nice line s and amazing originality, inside and out. Very jealous!

Most of the grey colours of that era are nice . I am particularly partial to Clarendon Grey. Have I, perchance, mentioned that my 1957 4 door is Clarendon grey ???

I saw two Morris Minors today a saloon and a traveller at the worst classic car show I have been to as most were modern cars that's why I rarely go to these shows. I left after 20 mins.

The pearl grey Traveller had been repainted some years ago but was extremely good still. There was a Clarendon Grey 4-door there today as well. As they seem to be mentioned so frequently, I didn't take any pics of it. It was partially obscured by balloons and banners anyway, and I did a 'spotted' post on it here a few weeks ago (8th July)

Hertfordshire and reality...? A non-sequitur surely...?  :P (I'm biased coz the ex Mrs PB lives in that county, casting spells and overhauling worn-out broomsticks).

To be fair it was Herts / Essex borders. Obviously the Ex Mrs PB is in the same coven as the ex Mrs Firedrake - a dragon laying waste to entire populations, any available males under 95 years old and generally draining the happiness out of the world. Still I got custody of the Morris - Yipeeeeeee!
