Replace wiper motor for 2speed.

Hey guys!
Wiper motor getting sluggish, won't clear on a dry screen.
So found a two speed motor online for mg mini etc says replaces Lrw 110, Thinking I could put this in and use the old gearing and wot not and wire it to a two position pull light switch (one for each speed)
The van is 1962 with clap hands wipers which I think are 110 degrees? What do folk think? Wondered if it won't park or miss the screen at the end of its arc. I've got a couple of spare wiper motors so I can take the gears from them.
Any ideas would be great, leaning through the window to flick the blade into action is a bit of a drag! Maybe a bit of string threaded through both windows and tied to the wipers

That's exactly what I did - though I also modified my gear wheel to have a larger sweep than standard (ended up making it too large). You'll need to make a plate to mount the round-body motor, and modify the wiring, but otherwise it all connects up the same as the old motor - you can reuse your rack, etc.

If using the standard Minor headlight switch to actuate the wipers, you'll need to wire in some relays or you'll burn out the switch. Here's the wiring diagram I used. Note that the five motor block connections are not correct - I think P and + are reversed - but it's easy to figure out when wiring up.

You might also consider dribbling some oil down into the wiper wheelboxes, or take them out and regrease them - it might not be your motor that's weakening, but a wheelbox trying to seize up.

Thanks for the reply, I've used relays for fogs and spots before, what do they do in this instance to stop the switch burning out? Excuse my ignorance I don't get into wiring unless I have to!

My old saloon has clap hand wipers and they got sluggish. It was just years of grot building up in the wiper motor box. Take it apart,clean it, a bit of new lubricant....could be good for years.

Thanks steve Clem, I will have a look behind the oddment box, I thinks its the driver side that's sticking, could be the cable.
Thought it would be cool to have 2 speed wipers after all these years!

Here is the circuit that I used for 2-speed wipers on our 1958 clap hands, before going on to incorporate intermittent and programmable wash/wipe. It uses a standard Minor headlight switch, 2 x 5-pin changeover relays and some additional wiring.

The 2-speed Lucas wiper motor that I used would not take the mechanism from the single speed motor, and the arc was much too much for the clap hands wiper boxes, but may be ok with the later ones?? I had to make a new pin to replace the standard Lucas one on the 2-speed motor. What have other people had to do to get 2 speeds on the early wipers?

a further possibility is to install a Lucas 2-speed wiper washer switch from a rover. Does not look to bad in the dashboard and you can connect a washer pump too.

That is not our experience with fitting a Lucas 14W 2-speed motor to replace the original 'clap hands' DR2 single speed. The 'slow' on the 14W is very much like the single speed, and the 'fast' is significantly faster, which was the reason for fitting it.

If I buy the lucas 14 W wiper motor, will I need to buy new switch. What else would I need to buy. I have a 1959 4 door and use it as a daily driver so faster wipers is a must in this country.

because it does not work with the claphand wiper

gear of motor and wiper gearbox number of teeth must be the correct combination for the correct wipe angle on the screen

so in the end, a long way to go, and if you sum the parts prices, not a cheap conversion. I was lucky and could buy many parts cheaply.

... old thread I know but Richard's (IslipMinor) wiring diagram above is good but terminal 3 on the wiper motor should ideally be connected to terminal 87 on the right-hand relay instead of S2 on the switch. This avoids current being drawn through the switch when wipers are on 'Fast'.

Here's how I did it - tho' the diagram does not include the Smartscreen gizmo for intermittent wipe whicih I wired inline between 87a on right-hand relay and teminal 5 (SLOW) on the wiper motor.

I recently acquired a Rover 2000 P6 wipe/wash switch like yours in the pic can you advise please do the connections for a 2 speed motor ie... the number of the terminal of the switch to which colour wire, the green with black tracer goes to the bottom the extended push part for the electric washers.

However the switch has 3 positions in its P6 setting first click was for a delay, then speeds 1 & 2 on click 2 & 3 so need assistance please. It not installed in the van yet but I assume the switch hole needs to enlarged too. You mention it looks nice in the dash any chance of a pic please

this is a picture i found how to connect the cables to the wiper plug. i used the cable colours as described in the picture. If you compare them with the picture of the switch i posted, you should be able by assigning the colours to the connectors

sorry, i got no diagram of the switch, i just removed the switch and took a few photos, the colors of the cables match the information on the wiper motor plug

one problem is, i don´t know exactly what kind of switch you have. There are several different types used in several cars. You told about 4 turning positions, mine only has 3 turning positions (off, speed1, speed2). So the pin assignment on the switch may not be identical. You will probably have to measure wich plugs are connected in which switch position.

please keep in mind, that you pay attention to whether your car is positive or negativ earth wired

The Wiper motor is normally mounted isolated. So pay attention when testing.....

The switch normally does this:
off, live wire should be connected to park ( wiper turns on until parking position is reached )
first turn, live wire should be connected to 1st speed
second turn, live wire should be connected to 2nd speed
on push earth or live should be connected to the pump (depending on the wiring of the pump)

hope my statements do not confuse you.....
