Hi,
I'm half way through a 1098 engine build at the moment done by following the Haynes manual, Moss diagrams and online advice. This build is in a new block that was sold as "ready for build with frost plugs " but not much more specific, it's since been inspected and bored out by a respectable machine shop.
Something I've read no mention of in the Haynes but have seen in other places is little oil feed restrictors - on the crank and the cam oil feed - and oil galley plugs.
Should I be inspecting/checking for these and perhaps replacing them?

Re: Oil Restrictors & Plugs
What 1098cc engine block is it that you are having the work done to?
I am not aware of any oil restrictors feeding the crankshaft, camshaft - (oil gallery plugs?).
The oil is just fed from the oil pump to the oil pressure release valve and from there via the various internal galleries to the journals.
The only oil feed restrictors that I am aware of are those fitted to cross drilled performance crankshafts.
If it is a new block you must ensure that the oil pressure relief valve seat is in place otherwise you will have no oil pressure.
Could you please be more specific on your information source or provide more details.
As the block has had machining work carried out on it the oil gallery plugs should be removed and the galleries flushed and brushed through. When all clean - new gallery plugs should be fitted.

Phil,
Monty could be referring to item 14 (Part no. 1A1964) for the camshaft on the Moss exploded view.
http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-mo ... 0f3d3.html
and item 13 (Part no 1G1167) for the crankshaft (made of unobtainium) on Moss view

Thank you for pointing those two items out to me.
I have just checked two blocks 1275cc & 948cc (unfortunately I do not have a 1098cc block to check) and am struggling to find the restrictors (1275cc Pt No: 1A1964 & 948cc Pt No: 1A1964) that are supposed to be fitted to both of those engine blocks according to the BL & BMC parts list. The 1098cc restrictor is the same part number 1A1964.
The drillings feeding the camshaft front bearing from the front main appears to be straight through and does not reduce in size when a drill is put down the gallery.
If they are installed I must be missing a trick.
As regards the restrictor in the crankshaft (Pt No: 1G1167) I have only come across them when the crankshaft has been cross drilled and the 1G1167 restrictors installed. Again am I missing a trick.
There is no requirement to remove the camshaft restrictor (if fitted) to ensure that the block is clean and I would advise against doing so if fitted.
As regards the crankshaft - if the crankshaft has been re-ground and there are removable screwed restrictors in the crankshaft big end bearings I would remove and clean out the crankshaft oil ways.
When refitting the crankshaft restrictors tighten and secure in place with Loctite but make sure that the oil way is clear when done.
I have crankshaft oil restrictors in my cross drilled Midget crankshaft but they were installed as part of the crankshaft modifications.
There are no crankshaft oil restrictors listed in the BL parts list for the 1275cc or 1098cc Marina engine.
There is a crankshaft oil restrictor listed on the MOSS web site for the 1275cc Midget (Pt No: 1G1167).
Therefore having examined two blocks and what work has been done to my 1275cc Midget cranks I am at a loss to explain why the restrictors are listed but do not appear to have been fitted to those items examined.

Re: Oil Restrictors & Plugs
Phil,
I think on the 1275 at least it is fitted on the centre main top half flush with the upper bearing shell. You can only see it when the crank is out. I did notice it when I rebuilt my 1275 but as you say there was no need to replace it.

Using your pointer I have now found the oil restrictor in the 1275cc block which serves the camshaft centre bearing from the centre main.
Having now found the restrictor I certainly would not attempt to remove the it - just making sure that the restrictor/gallery is clear of crud.
The BL parts list is confusing as it appears in the parts list as if it is located in the gallery from the front main to the front camshaft bearing.

Amazing super detailed replies chaps, thank you. Another weight off my mind for the build (my first).
