No heat!

Post by stag36587 »

Just trying to resolve a few niggles.

My heater isn't producing any heat. So far I've replaced engine thermostat and heater valve etc., What else should I try? I wondered if water may not be circulating through the engine properly - water in radiator appears to be still when engine running. how can I check that water pump us ok?

Thanks

What age is your car? I'm assuming it's a 1098cc 1962-on, judging by your sig pic...

With the engine warmed up, feel the heater hoses - they should get pretty hot. If they do, the fault may lie with a blocked heater matrix - you could try reverse-flushing it, and some people have achieved good results by dropping in a Calgon or dishwasher tablet into the cooling system then running it for a few miles.

Is the correct thermostat fitted, and fitted the right way up, and when was the water pump last changed?

Pointless (engine would overheat if the pump was not working?), but you could remove the thermostwt. The coolant would then flow throgh the radiator, even if cold or if the themostat was faulty.

I would guess the valve is turned off or the heater matrix is blocked. I am assuming the heater fan is operating correctly?

It wouldn't simply be an air-lock would it?

I agree, probably the most likely cause, if you do mess with the stat, use a summer one rather than non, otherwise circulation will suffer. There is a special ring available to replace the stat if you did decide to dispense with it altogether, don't run without.

Thanks guys most likely to be a blocked matrix I think. Thermostat and heater valve are new and working, heater fan works too, Once I've completed some house diy  I'll see if the heater matrix is blocked.

The car sat for 20 years before I rebuilt it which is why I wondered about a non-functioning water pump, especially as the original small concertina hose at the front of the engine was blocked solid.
