The stuff I use seems to lift and hold the dust in the microfibre application cloth without any damage.
However I do agree that for anything heavier than a slight dust I would probably rinse the car first.
Tried this stuff for the first time a couple of weeks ago when I was taking the A30 to a show and time was short. Boomlander is absolutely right. It's good.
