Hi People, About five years ago, I bought and fitted the modified oil seal kit and although its a huge improvement over the original scroll, It's not quite up to modern 'dry as a bone' standard and will start to weep at eighteen month intervals . I belive JLH do a kit and I just wondered if anybody has used their modification and how does it perform ??
Many Thanks...
A couple of years ago I ordered one of the "improved" rear oil seal kits from a Minor "specialist". Prior to purchase I enquired about fitting, and was assured that it was just a question of dropping the sump. WRONG. It invovled removing the backplate (ie clutch & flywheel which means either engine or gearbox out of the car), and the rear main bearing cap. There is then some pretty exact machining to be done to get a smooth surface. The seal is made on the outside edge of the crank flange. The kit warns that this must be within certain tolerances, and I've found three out of five cranks were NOT suitable. When the seal was eventually fitted it was great for about 12,000 miles. After that we got so much oil on the clutch that I reverted to the standard arrangement. I'd rather have a few drips of oil than all the expense and hassle for something that doesn't last. Still, each to their own, and I'm sure that some people will swear by the new seal rather than at it.
The rear carnk seal comes as standard on the Maestro 1275 which was one of the plus points for that conversion which you were offering. (Well that's what you told me a couple of years ago)
There is another company that makes them as well, but I dont know how good they are, maybe Dan or Matt could ask in their Spridget circles to see if they have the same drawbacks. http://www.petermayengineering.co.uk/

Yes the Maestro engine does come with a proper crank oil seal, which works much more efficiently that any aftermarket item. However we do not sell them seperately, they only come as part of the complete engine package.
With the benefits of having a brand new motor modified to rear wheel drive and fully balanced ,they represent excellent value.
