'Chrome' windscreen trim installation

Hello

Does anyone have some tips they would be willing to share on fitting the 'chrome' plastic insert into rubber windscreen surrounds (single screen models)?

I read somewhere that it is tricky.

Need a special tool....triangular wire thing on a handle which parts the rubber and presses in the insert - from memory....

The tool (windscreen plastic chrome insert fitting tool) is GLS 111T available from Charles Ware.

It requires pushing well into the corners of the screen rubber, thus making sure it expands the rubber over the body sufficiently. I other words don't just glide round the corners, make sure enough length of the strip is pushed in. When reaching the end cut the strip a little over required length, say 6 mm, and ease the last bit in. That way you shouldn't get a gap appear later on.

They are advertising on 'e' bay black infill for a Vauxhall Chevette and it looks to be the same profile as the Minor.

Just done mine Don not easy with a lot of patience, didn't know about the tool so I just used a blunt 6mm screw driver. I put the joint at the bottom ,right or wrong I don't know but that's what I did as I thought it would look neater. I found I had to start 2 maybe 3 mm before centre as it walked that bit as you started then tuck one edge in along about 30mm and then pick the other edge up over the bead with the screw driver being really carefull you don't slip and gouge the paint. Corners are the hardest especially the last one. Centre the screen in the rubber as best you can before you start otherwise you will have one side easy and the other tight. I had to massage the rubber outwards as I was working along, not much probably a couple of mil but that helped as well. I used a bit of soap as well especially in the corners but only liberally as everything gets slippery. I can tell you my fingers were sore the next day.

Took me about three hours, hope this helps.

I made this from a file handle and a bit of welding rod bent round the plastic chrome trim to shape it, something similar to the bought one. Ive fitted loads of them with this and if you put the trim into some luke warm water before you start it helps soften it a bit. If your putting sealant in seal it before you fit this as it expands the rubber nice and tight.

My Minor came with newish windscreen rubber but no trim fitted. I'm pretty sure that it is the type that accepts the plastic trim rather than the stainless steel trim.
I'll go ahead and order the trim and give it a go, using your advice.

Hi everyone, I'm having a bit of trouble with my trim. I brought the rubber what uses the original, metal trim, I can get the top and bottom in but having trouble going round the corners. Wondered if anyone has any tips?

Having had my attention drawn to this thread again, just a small point but it seems I did not thank Phil for his help on black infill. So belated thanks if you see this Phil ! Incidentally instead of replacing the plastic chrome trim, I was able to strip away the 'chrome' leaving a black rubber finish, done in situ as well !

I have been trying to put a new plastic chrome insert in the windscreen of my 1968 minor. I bought the new insert and the vastly overpriced special tool from ESM. I spent the whole of yesterday trying to insert the strip. I managed about 18 inches and have now lost all feeling in the ends of my fingers. I know there has been several posts on this subject and I may be a bit thick but how do you use the tool? the tool has several different shapes. I have been using the diamond shape ones there is a small and large one. I have tried them both but they don't seem to work. Does the insert go through the diamond shape tool or does it follow behind it. Do I use the small or large diamond shape ? I made sure the insert was nice and warm and applied some silicone lubrication to the windscreen rubber. Any help would be appreciated.

The filler goes through the diamond of the tool. The tool opens the groove and the filler just feeds into the groove behind the tool.
The size of the diamond depends on the size of the filler.

Whilst it is relative to a Mini the filler is virtually the same.
Note the wiggle motion of the tool and the use of silicon spray to ease the filler into the groove.

Thank you so much for that. After looking at the video I realised what I was doing wrong. I was pulling instead of pushing. Insert now in and looking very smart. Once again my thanks.
