Ignition Light
Hi,
Just put all of my engine back together and finished wiring in the loom, when I now turn on the ignition I am not getting the red ignition light coming on, equally i have no spark etc. What determines the little red light to come on? I have power at the coil, what other checks can i make to sort my problem?
Cheers
Martyn
Ps anyone with a type 9 box? where is the plug to refill the oil?

just tried it again, i am now getting a spark but still no ignition light. I put in a brand new loom and it was idiot proofed with all the wiring labled. I dont actually have a place to put the oil filter lead but i am guessing that wont affect the ignition light. When i try to start it now i am getting no firing but i am getting a backfire through the exhaust, do i have a timing issue here?

Sounds more like the HT leads are in the wrong place. When i try to start it now i am getting no firing but i am getting a backfire through the exhaust, do i have a timing issue here?
As for the charging light - no idea other than to re check everything, but first things first and get the engine running.
For the charging circuit, I strongly suspect the problem relates to the new wiring loom (or the fitting of it) - and it may be anything at all (including the bulb not working) or a misplaced wire.
When the engine is running you should get power on the field connector at the dynamo and when you rev the car, you should get 12-14 volts present at the dynamo output.

thanks for th replies, the loom is for an alternator which is what i have. I now have aspark, my problem was the distributor which i have changed. The car now fires but fails to run for longer than a couple of secs so i think i may now have a fueling issue which i will look into tomorrow. Cant wait till the engine is running properly though it sounds awesome even if only for a few seconds

sorry when i said i changed the dizzy i meant i tried another after figuring there may have been a fault with the first one. The engine is an MED 1340 that had been in another car previous for 600miles only. When i purchased it it had no dizzy or any electrics of any sort so i have had to use stuff i have lying around while i wait for my Aldon stuff to arrive. Sorry i said it sounded awesome, that was relatively speaking. Compared to the 1098 standard engine and exhaust it sounds quite a lot beefier. Obviously compared to my new triumph speed triple with race cans or the Marcos V6 in the garage it cant touch the sound but I was just happy to hear it run yesterday.

no,
the lower speed limits are on the channel islands. We have speeds right up to the heady heights of 70mph and the mainland is only 25 mins away!!!! I have now fitted the aldon gear, seems to make the engine run better at higher revs. I guess the advance is mapped slightly better for my tuned engine. Still no go with the ignition light though, tested for power today and there is no power at the bulb end. Is the light controlled by something on the alternator? Its not a major thing, everything works as it should it would just warn me if there was a problem.
Cheers
