The fall and rise of the shudder

Post by Multiphonikks »

Hi folks!

Yet another weekend nearly over (and I've only just started to relax after recovering from last week!)

Anyway...

Hebe now has her M.O.T. Fantastically the guy who sorted out her few failure points had a play with the door (I think) on the driver's side since it now closes a lot better than it did and there are no horrible gaps at the top for the wind to come howling through!

Hebe's creaking back end which we had almost every time we pulled away has now gone so I suspect the culprit was the incorrectly fitted spring hanger plate from when she had the accident repairs. However, she's still shuddering on reverse and on pulling away. When it's just me in the car she's absolutely fine and doesn't make horrid noises and when I have passengers the shuddering is sporadic.

Take, for example, the trip we had on Friday to cribb's causeway. She shuddered on every pulling away regardless of it being forwards or backwards. Pyoor Kate also commented that Hebe had been shuddering on the way to the MOT too.

But then today the same passengers who came with me on Friday went out with me in the car and there was no sign of shudders at all.

Hebe does this from time to time and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions to the causes?

The gearbox cable is the correct taugtness (at least by my reckoning), the engine stays are fine, and as far as I can tell the clutch is okay (other than me needing to change the travel on the clutch as the biting point is a bit close to the floor...

The only thing I can possibly think of right now is perhaps something to do with moisture. It was quite late on Friday night (and it was quite cold and wet) and today it's been a lot warmer and drier.

Anyone else experience similar problems in similar situations? Hebe's certainly screeching as I'd expect if the clutch was slipping...

It's not actually meant to have any taughtness (tension). It's only meant to have the slack removed.

~*sigh*... that's what I thought.

Since my Gearbox needs a bit of an overhaul I may research a new one...and then do the clutch at the same time :)

the engine stays are fine
Are you sure they are not done up too tight either as this doesnt help.
Hebe's certainly screeching as I'd expect if the clutch was slipping...
Clutch slip is not assosiated with screeching thats usually the bearing, clutch slip is when you put you foot down and the engine revs rise faster than the car is actually going especailly on hills.
Cheers

Screeching is a loose fan belt !! Nothing to do with the clutch.

Funny how the fanbelt only comes loose on Wilberforce when you half press the clutch! That's a new one on me.
