Evening all,
Just back from a weekend trip to Cheltenham and monitored oil pressure the whole way. The results are 50 lbs at 60mph and around 20 (maybe approaching 15) at idle. Are they cause for concern or just about ok?

Re: Oil pressures
It is a tad low at idle but not bad when running.
I presume it has had an oil and filter change, and, you are not running with black water in there.
It is also well worth using a decent quality 20w50 oil and not the cheap supermarket stuff, unless the engine is already on its way out and past the point of rebuild time.
I would also be tempted to remove the pressure release valve and check/clean it.
I wouldn't worry about it too much though, but just keep an eye on it.

Re: Oil pressures
thanks all - using comma oil with a full oil and filter change about 500 miles ago. will definitely have a look at the oil pressure release valve and give it a clean

Re: Oil pressures
I did 60 mph for the first time in ten years a few weeks ago and surprised myself [and the car I think] but that was just to test the engine and gearbox after a rebuild of the box and general fettle with the engine while she was out of the car and changed all the various necessaries. She always seemed to feel tight before the rebuild and I never reached the dizzy speeds of over 55 mph as she felt she wouldn't / didn't want to attain that level of mph but now I can't stop her .

Re: Oil pressures
haha! if i didn't have the GPS on my phone on I'd be thinking i was doing a (wobbly) 70mph. strangely the engine groans a bit at 50, but sits very happily at 60 apart from a little bit of speed shake in the steering wheel.
there's still plenty of more to give at that speed, but i'd be worries about the level of revs and my eardrums!

Re: Oil pressures
i would not worry too much 50 psi is fine when your driving , and 15 is ok at tickover for a warm engine , the book says it can go down as low as 8 psi at idle before the low pressure light comes on . you can always put some stp oil treatment into the oil to keep the pressures a bit higher if your worried .
