Rear spring hanger replacement

Post by mrbenn »

Hi folks,

my Minor needs a new rear spring hanger piece on the o/s. The pin that the damper arm link attaches to has come loose due to corrosion, plus it has been patched before.

The welder chap that is doing it for me has asked me to get the panel that goes on the other side and extends up a bit. I know it may be a stupid question, but I guess he means this in the link below?

I've already bought the spring hanger repair panel.

Many thanks.

From your description that's what I'd buy him. Do you have time to double check with your welder , showing him the picture , to make sure. It sounds as though he knows what he's doing. Did your chat with him include the question has he done this specific type of repair before ?

We did have a horror story before on the forum , where someone entrusted a garage to do both spring hangers repair and the garage
welded the plates too far forward. The owner didn't have enough room to refit the prop shaft back on the car.
Very careful measurements have to be taken.

This post came very shortly after I'd done my pals Minor ( both sides ). I'd taken loads of measurements and made a jig , to line up
the pins for the shackles. I then set to , welding it all in. Worked a treat ... at the time , I was accused of being too fussy.

When we discussed the post on the Forum a month or two later , he asked me what I thought the problem was ( because it had been done by a garage ! ). There was a " light bulb moment " when I said the garage hadn't taken accurate measurements and had put them roughly where they thought they had to go. With the springs and back axle in place , there wasn't enough room to get the prop connected to the gearbox ! It dawned on my mate that the work would have to undone and done again.. correctly.
Funnily enough my mates listens carefully to me a bit more these days.

Thanks very much for the info, Bob. I'll try to send him a picture of the part - thats a good idea.

He says he has worked on loads of these (been a welder for 37 years with scars to prove it!), and things he mentioned when we were discussing Minors certainly backed this up. He talked about measuring and making sure everything was lined up, and told me a shocking story of his own about a convertible Minor he was tasked with sorting out after someone had made a cock a doodle diddley-up. The issue with the propshaft not fitting sounds similarly horrific!

Thanks again :D
