Front damper issue?

Hi all,

My front dampers are a little uneven, so i took the filler nut of the top (the one in the middle?) And it immediately oozed foul smelling oil.

Should it be pushing the oil out? If so, how do I get more back in if it's throwing it back out?
Or an I opening the worn nut?

If i change the oil in the damper how do you empty/ refill them?

There's nothing useful in the Haynes.

Jim,
You can remove the screw at the bottom but do read this so you can see what is behind the screw.

Best to bounce the car and flush both front dampers and refill with SAE30 or some recommend SAE40.
Then do the rears which are easily removed and can be done on the bench.

Is it normal for the oil to come out of the top when the centre screw (filler?) is removed?

Jim,
No-I have never come across that. There must have been air trapped in there. Flush and replace the oil and see how it goes from there. A big syringe is a helpful tool for filling.

I've got my sae30 ready, once he's home I'll drop the bottom nut (and catch the needle and springs!!) on both sides and refill. Do they take much oil?

I've got "new fangled" telescopic dampers on the rear, which are quite hard, hence feeling the bounce on the front.

Jim,
They don't take that much oil at all-about 2 ...3 egg cups as a guess.
