948 Gearbox bush or bearing
I've just dismantled two well worn 948 boxes in the hope of assembling one good one, and now doing the shopping list. I need the mainshaft nose bearing, where it enters the first motion shaft. ESM list a needle roller bearing for the 1098 and a bush for the 948, BM list the bearing as 948/1098. Which is correct please, or are they interchangeable and I can use bush or needle bearing in a 948?

Re: 948 Gearbox bush or bearing
The 948cc smooth case gearbox has a bush Pt No: 2A3034.
The 1098cc ribbed gearbox has a needle roller bearing Pt No: CHM172.
See attached link from MOSS parts list.

I have also checked against the BMC parts list for the 948cc gearbox and it does state bush Pt No: 2A3034.
The first motion shafts have different part numbers:-
948cc................... 22A141
1098cc..................22G171
Also the BM bearing No: 10G140.............I do not recognise it and it does not appear to be listed in the MOSS link above or in my Minor BMC parts list.

Re: 948 Gearbox bush or bearing
Thanks Phil, a bush it is then. Have you any idea why the mainshaft is listed with two part numbers, both shown as 803 - 1098?

In reply to your question I do not know at this point of time.
The MOSS listing has two different part numbers for the two different shafts.
The mainshaft/3rd motion shaft listed in my BMC 948cc gearbox parts list is shown as Pt No: 22A213.

Re: 948 Gearbox bush or bearing
I've answered my own question. Getting access to some1098 bits I find that the needle roller bearing fits the 1098 first and third shafts but not the 948 shafts. I shall have to get a bush.
The altered bearing size (and the change to baulk ring syncro) explains the different part numbers between the boxes. Be careful if you are buying gearbox parts, some suppliers aren't describing fitments very carefully.
