Hi sandun,

I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the images are of an ox (a castrated male cow) crossing a ford (a shallow river crossing). 'Ox' + 'Ford' gives 'Oxford', and this is the city where William Morris founded Morris Motors (he had previously run a bicycle shop on Longwall Street in Oxford).

Hope this helps - I don't know if the other bits on the badge are there for a reason, or just to look good :D

The Red Ox over the three blue wavy stripes used as part of the Morris badge was taken from the Heraldic device or coat of arms for Oxford.
See:-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Oxford

As liammonty describes above - the blue wavy lines are considered to represent the River Thames and the Ox crossing a ford (shallow river crossing) so as to represent OX FORD.

I am not aware that any of the remaining parts of the badge have a distinct meaning except of course the name MORRIS.

As regards the side lines they are just for embellishment.

Lots of chrome embellishment was a sign of the times in the 1950s/1960s highly practiced by American motor manufactures at that time and carried over to the UK after WW2.
Vauxhall owned by the American company GM was one of the most prolific users of chrome embellishment.

Oxford is just one city but has as it has grown absorbed several villages/areas into the overall city authority but still one city.
It is known as the city of 'dreaming spires' as it has many churches with spires/domes within the city limits.

Oxford is a leading if not the leading university city in the UK. (apologies to Cambridge (another leading university city)).
Oxford is a most beautiful city.
One of the best views of the dreaming spires is from the high ground to the south of Oxford in the immediate area adjacent to where Mr Grumpy had his Minor business. The view always took my breath away whenever I visited his premises.

I can;t add anything to what has already been said, but if that's your bonnet in the picture then what a fantastic job you have made of both the bonnet and the badge, it looks really good.

A jolly story about Oxford and it is absolutely true.

Before the Oxford ring road/bypass the main road A40 ran from west Wales right through the centre of Oxford City (not the football team  ).
West Wales - especially Pembrokeshire grew and still does grow early new potatoes and many were delivered by lorry to Covent Garden fruit and vegetable market in London
The signage at the time in Oxford was not to good and one of the lorry drivers got lost. He drove round and round and was getting nowhere - see a policeman he stopped and asked the way.
The policeman seeing the company name on the side of the lorry told the lorry driver not to worry as other company drivers were in the area and just to follow behind the other driver(s).
'You dam fool' (or words to that effect) the lorry driver said to the policeman - that other driver was me.
The driver eventually got the directions from the embarrassed policeman and managed to find his way out of Oxford and back onto the A40 and onto London.
The driver was one of the drivers who used to take early new potatoes from my grandfather's farm in Pembrokeshire to market.
Happy days :D
