4 Door sill and floor panels

Good evening all,

I am currently restoring a 4 door, the last owner has done something very strange with the sills so i am looking at stripping them back completely and rebuilding each sill at a time. The floor pan its self is also a mess so I think I will be putting a new one in, could you give any pros or costs to fitting 1/4 floor pans over half? it seems to be cheeper to buy 1/4 panels than it does to buy the half panels.

so with the above two jobs in mind what order would I be best to do it in?
The centre cross member looks like that won't last many more years so I will probs be replacing that but I will probs do that once the sills and floor are in place (unless advised otherwise!!).

I would do the floors and sill first then the crossmember. You can just get the ends if you don't need the full piece.

Ive fitted full floors to 2 of my cars and they really give you a good solid basis to work from. Below is a pic of my traveller which needed both sides doing due to a patchwork of patches over the years!

Personally I would tackle the cross member before the floor pans, as it is useful to be able to get access to the chassis leg ends from above by cutting out strips of floor. You could either do the cross member and pans as one job, or cut and patch the existing floor temporarily. (I'd also hate to spoil new pans by cutting out the welds to the cross member!)

You're right to start with the sills, so that the cross member and pans have a sound structure to support them.

I would have used half floors, but they became unavailable at the time I needed them. With hindsight, though, quarters do have the advantage of helping keep the car in shape, particularly if you're removing the cross member.

Hi there . I'm in the process of doing the same job . Check my restoration post. I started with one set of sill panels .just to make sure the sills were welded in the correct place. Once I did this I removed and replaced the cross member . Make sure you weld in support beams before any major cutting .

Many thanks for the replies, its really is much appreciated. Sounds like I will be doing the sills first, then cutting the floor and doing the cross member then onto fitting the floor last of all.

Here is a couple of pictures of how the car looks atm.

Time to look at getting cutting then! Once again cheers for the advice.

Time to look at getting cutting then.................................................not before you weld a brace across the door it will sag if you don,t :o (You probably were going to but just in case)

kennatt - I was tempted to cut out the metal without a brace.... then again I probably should brace it ;)
In all seriousness thanks for the heads up but I wouldn't cut away that much without a brace.
