Engine Date.

Post by amgrave »

Can an engine be dated by the number like you can with the car number?
The engine number in question is 10MA-U-H 32293 and just wondered if it is the one fitted in the car when new in 1963, although I doubt it is as the engines don't last as long as our cars and as the car would be an early version fitted with a 1098 engine the number seems a bit high to me.
Thanks in advance.

The vehicle log-book usually shows the engine number.

Unfortunately I have not got the original log book only the later paper one and that could have been updated sometime in the past so I can't go by that. Nice try though Jowett Javelin and that was a nice car too :D

14000 1098s made in 1962, 45000 made in 1963 so your engine might well be early-mid 1963. POMMreg will be the ultimate expert on this.

Thanks for that Rob, I was not expecting that amount of engines to have been built in that time hence the question. I am not one for keeping things original usually but the engine is a bit tired although still running well and it is time for a rebuild. I was thinking of getting a replacement to do up and fit it in place of mine then pass mine on to someone else that might need it however if it is the original one fitted I think it might be better to put it back in after a rebuild.

If pushed, 5/63?

Does this make sense?
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!
