Hub oil seal/bearing

Post by Gaskies »

Hello.

I'm new to the site and have a question about the fitting of an oil seal to the wheel hub. I have a trailer with what I am sure are Morris Minor wheel hubs on. I've stripped one down, the original bearing was shot to pieces. I have a wheel bearing kit ready to fit but I'm a bit unsure about the oil seal.

When fitted it sits on a lip inside the hub and stands a few mil proud of the lip I would expect the bearing to sit on. If the bearing were fitted, it would stand around 3 mil proud of the top of the hub.

I've seen a few threads relating to the correct way round to fit the oil seal with people advocating the printed numbers on the seal facing toward the axle and vice versa.

I'm hoping someone can help with advising me what way round the oil seal should go and whether the photo's I've attached appear correct in terms of the seal standing proud of the lip the bearing sits on?

The rubber seal that was originally inside the hub was all but destroyed so I can't get any clues from that.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I think there's part of the old seal still in the hub preventing the new one from going fully home.

I agree. L-section ring left over from the old sealing ring. Dremel it or even screwdriver it out. Not the most critical area so long as you don't totally destroy the hub in that area. Tiny bead of gasket goop round where the seal fits will help take up any slack.

My brain is not 100% today, but, is that seal round the right way?

Thanks guys. I see it now. I thought the lip was part of the hub. I'll take to it with a screwdriver and hammer and get the bugger out. I've seen a few threads in relation to the correct way round for the oil seal. I'm happy enough now that it should go the opposite way around to how it is in my second pic.

Again, thanks. :D
