Horn stuck on

We recently found ourselves with the horn 'stuck on' and it took a helpful passer byer to realise that removing the top fuse was the only solution. The fuse was blown but he suggested that it is probably the points within the horn itself. Does this sound right and if so it it simply a case of opening the horn and using some fine sandpaper?

Assuming the horn is the central press type fitted to later models, this also needs to be checked.

The horn is just a press switch. It completes the circuit to earth as the horns themselves are always "live" so to speak. (see wiring Diagramme at the head of this section)
If the horns are permanently "on" i.e. making a noise, then it is earthing somehow and this you Need to find. A multimeter is the best tool for this.

A quick check to see if the press Switch is at fault is to remove it by prising it gently free and checking it with the meter.

As I remember it there are two horns. Are they both sounding off? For my logic, it would be too much a coincidence if both became faulty at the same time.

Rather than removing the fuse, surely just taking the wire off the horn would be simpler? As above, the horn is always live. One wire supplies the power the other leads to the horn push in the steering column. Pressing the button completes the circuit to earth. It used to be quite common (not just in Minors) that the contacts and wire in the column would wear and short to earth leading to the horn being permanently on. I can remember by first Minor sounding the horn whenever I turned left, and then stopping the horn when the steering wheel was centred.

Certainly not 'points in the horn'...... Removing the fuse was certainly the right thing to do! As above - it will be the earth connection at the steering column.
