803 cc Series II APHM Oil Filter

Post by Rabbitt »

I have purchased a couple of new filters but haven't removed the old one yet (as I wanted to receive the new one first .. ! ! ) :D
I have been assured the new filter/s are the correct ones for the 803 - (shipped to New Zealand from UK)... and are the direct screw-on type. Picture attached. .. It may be a dumb question , but what is the bolt used for ? ... if it is a direct screw-in as per "normal today" .. whatever "normal" is .. :P[frame]Image[/frame]

Do you mean the nut, if so it could be to protect the thread in transit.

Of course - thanks .. the nut. That did cross my mind but was used to seeing plastic protector "sleeves" over threads , so wanted to make 100% sure I was not missing anything obvious. Seems overkill to use a nut , but no doubt I will find a use for it ! ! I

P.S. I don't seem to have this "Clip" on my existing filter though...? Any issues here ? or is this clip just a model-specific item (mines export) and no problem.[frame]Image[/frame]

Rabbit,
Take some time to read this before you start changing your oil filter on the 803 engine.

As above - you need to check the size of the hole -and if too big get a reducer from Declan.

Gosh , you chaps are invaluable .. thank you so much. Very much appreciated for the heads-up. I will investigate this evening.
The filters (3) were purchased from what I would assume are one of the primary suppliers in UK. Would they not be aware of the issue?( One of the photos in Declan's post contains what looks identical to the filters I purchased - without checking the aperture size.)
The current old filter on the car is actually a Ryco Z3 which is a discontinued product - haven't removed it yet. I wonder how long that has been in there.
I would sure appreciate some advice/help in obtaining a reducer to New Zealand - if it goes that way ..
Cheers and thanks again to Declan , Rolf and Roy for their dedication.

Followup - The filter aperture appears to be 5mm ! ! ! Note 5mm drill bit inserted - and a 1.5mm drill bit laying alongside. (the empty drill holder labels are also visible) Surprising that the 5mm fits snug. So the difference is substantial. Looks like a reducer is sure on the cards - 1.5mm sure looks small.[frame]Image[/frame]

Declan is your man for this - it's a by=pass filter - so it's bleeding your precious oil pressure away directly to the sump - rather than round the bearings. If the holes are too big there will be next to no pressure going to the bearings........

Stevey fitted one from Declan to his 803 and the oil pressure is always excellent :D

Rabbit,
I posted it to your address in New Zealand this morning. The postage was quite expensive-1.50 Euro :D .
Let us know how you get on and post up the pressure readings before and aft.

Amazing postage - can barely send a 'large letter' here within UK for that amount. And great service from Declan - another 803 saved from a rattly end to the crankshaft. The people who are selling these very incorrect filters are doing 803 owners no good service at all....

Roy,
I have already contacted the person selling them on ebay to draw their attention to the issue.

Well done - but will they bother? I sadly doubt it. Perhaps the should be highlighted urgently in the MMOC magazine ?

Sorry to hijack the post. Does anybody know if the oil filter sold by esm as an 803 filter needs the reducer?
and who supplies them?

Thanks guys

They will be available again but later this year as the chap in Switzerland who makes them is too busy re-furbishing his house at the moment and he has no access to his workshop at present. He will let me know when he makes the next batch and I will inform those on the waiting list accordingly.
