Near the bottom of the page is some suitable info. 8 amps and you'll be on the safe side. Feed from ignition switch into the coil is white, feed from coil to dissy is white with black trace. 30 pence per metre so might be cheaper to order what you need plus a party pack big enough to keep you motoring for another decade. The petrol to halfords plus their prices might exceed the cost of ordering a jumbo bag from Autosparks. I had a new loom from them plus about 20 metres off odd bits so I could add a screen washer, an extra brake light, some extra earth wires, new headlamp 'pigtails' and a USB power supply socket.

Worth printing off the page above for your glovebox. Works for 99.9% of British wiring of the era.

Re: Wire size
Thanks for that much appreciated, another quick question I've got the orange/red rear lights on my car I'd quite like to put the original lights back on, the ones where the brake light flashes as the indicator, as it has a flasher relay is this a straight swap

Re: Wire size
Just off of the top of my head I think it is a DB10 flasher relay that is needed to operate the brake lights as a combined brake/flasher. I've never owned one or fixed one so I'd try to find someone on here who has knowledge of the correct operation of this piece of kit.
edit. Found it... http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product/167 One of these is what you need. Usually found on the inside of the front right inner wing, IIRC.

If you go for LED lights and have an 8-yr old kid (They're all Nintendo savvy!) nearby you can run the same thing through an Arduino or Raspberry Pi controller for much less money.
