Coil connections

Post by Leyland »

Good morning friends

I have just purchased a new coil. My old one had a marking SW which the white cable went to, and the White and black cable to the other connection.
The new coil is just marked + and - Am I correct in thinking the White only cable goes to the + connection?
Thanks for any help. Ty

Depends if your car is positive or negative earth. If it is a +ive earth car, the current has to go to earth at the points when they close. Therefore, the +ive terminal on the coil must be the CB (contact breaker) terminal to go to the distributor via the low tension lead and thus to earth. If the car is -ive earth, it will be opposite way round.
To be more specific about your question, the white cable (from the switch) would go to the -ive terminal on the coil only if your car is +ive earth. If your car has been changed to -ive earth, then the white wire will go to the +ive terminal of the coil.

Hope it's a 'good' coil - and not some of the cr@p made in far away tin huts.......... and is it 3.2 ohms impedance? Some suppliers sell low impedance coils ( ~ 2 ohms) intended for use with ballast ignition. What's wrong with the old coil ? Be sure to carry it in the car so you can refit it when the new coil fails......
