rear brake cylinder problem

Hi, I have a problem with my nearside rear brake cylinder. It keeps dropping into the drum meaning the handbrake is useless and on a rolling road, the rear brake records an unhealthy zero. I have replaced the cylinder and adjusted the handbrake and initially everything is fine. A week later, the cylinder has fallen into the drum again and I have no nearside rear brake. I have copied the offside brake but still it keeps happening. Is there a clip/ cover/device which stops the cylinder falling into the drum?

This rubber boot holds the cylinder onto the axle while still allowing it to slide up and down.

Make sure that the brake pipe to the respective cylinder is not too long.
If too long and it can press on the back of the cylinder resulting in the cylinder becoming dislodged.

There must be NO WAY that it can 'fall in to the drum' - the backplate must be worn -or someone has perhaps filed the cylinder edges to make it fit more easily into the slot. You could try swapping cylinders side to side -but that's quite a lot of work. I would try a new GENUINE rear cylinder.

i thought that there was two steel horseshou shaped clips on diff side of backplate to hold cyl in, check on this . re john.

There are no clips to hold the cylinder in place. See link,

The cylinder hooks into the back plate and the rubber gaiter should hold it in place.
As I said above if the rear brake pipe is too long the cylinder cannot sit correctly into the backplate and the cylinder will become displaced.

You can't rely on the rubber boot to hold an important item like this in place! It should NOT be able to 'fall into the drum' whether the boot is present or not. Get a new cylinder urgently.
