Mystery dipstick markings

Post by mariononslow20 »

Here's a puzzle; 1098 engine with a dipstick that has 3 notches, min, max and sort of super-max. Which level should I fill to?

The engine was a recon unit fitted about 10 years ago if that sheds any light. Its just slightly unsettling that the max may not be enough[frame]Image[/frame]

The picture isn't v good. The top notch above Max runs across the blade like the others, but looks like it has been added by using a hacksaw.

Measure from the collar (where it sits in the support tube) to each of the markings and report back, we can then compare with a standard dipstick and ascertain whether your markings are correct.

Looks like the extra mark is just that. If it bothers you - no harm will come of running with the level half way between the two high marks. And next oil changhe - add the correct volume of oil, then after running the engine to circulate the oil, and a couple of minutes to settle - check where the oil sits and use that mark in future.

A picture of the whole dipstick will shed more light on what dipstick it is as there were several different types/lengths of dipstick fitted to the 'A' Series.

We have the answer, as bmecosse suggested I did a complete oil change and put the correct amount of oil in (6.5pints)

The level now comes to the original max mark, so I will ignore the other one

Thanks for your input
