They were always red. On a 1960 car it would have been proper glass enamel. Later on they were simply painted and the paint comes off after a while. If you've bought a later reproduction one you possibly have to paint it yourself? Alternatively spend a bit more and buy the correct one for your car
I'm confused by the picture you've attached which clearly shows a red badge?
There have been several threads before regarding this subject.

ESM sell the earlier badge with the red enamel insert for the same price as the later (paint yourself) one so ask them if they'd swap the part for you: http://www.morrisminorspares.com/search/bonnet-badge

Good advice Louise. I've never had to buy one but I had assumed that the earlier type, being rather more involved to manufacture, would be more expensive!
If they are the same price, why would anyone choose an later unpainted type I wonder?

Maybe for the same reason they'd want a domed chrome screw to fit a sun visor - originality?

hi all
thanks for the replies
its just that the one on the car was abit knackered ie chrome was badly pitted
I was at esm and they asked the year of my motor I can only assume it was a mistake no probs
i'll drop them a line and see what is the best result
