Rewiring behind dash

Post by Casiofi »

Hello folks! 18 months after I took the engine out to cure a small oil leak, and a whole load of replacing knackered components, cutting out rusty panels, and generally tidying the mighty morris up, and she's almost ready for her MOT (10 days!). The last main hurdle to overcome is the wiring - I bought a new wiring loom from ESM with the alternator loom wired in already as my old loom was like an undersealed birds nest. I've done most of the engine/lights, it's just all the behind the dash stuff left:

Speedo/Voltage Regulator
Wipers
Light switch
Backlight switch
Ignition switch
Column Switches/Horn
Dip Switch

I know (very) roughly which colours go to which parts thanks to the simplified wiring diagram, but I'm not sure which colours go to which terminals - if anyone could link me to a full wiring diagram, or if anyone has any pointers or could send me pictures of the rear of the speedo etc, that would really be appreciated!

The 'full' diagrams are in the Workshop manual - free on Google - search for Morris minor Workshop Manual....

That's me got main beam, dipped beam and sidelights working, along with the horn! Indicators aren't playing ball but I haven't looked into them too much yet. I'm a bit confused with the wipers and speedo/voltage regulator, I can only seem to find two wires to go to the wiper switch (black/green and black) when there are three on the wiper motor (black, black/green, green) - as I'm assuming the two single green wires and the twin green wire (two wires, one spade connector) all go to the speedo? Will the wipers only work once the speedo is all wired up?

You need a solid green wire to the wiper motor - usually shared with the heater motor.

Wiring pretty much done apart from a couple of things. The fuel gauge isn't working, it moves from absolute zero to empty when the ignition is on despite the fact that it has 10L of fuel in it. But I'll sort that after the MOT and once it's had a full tank. The other issue is the indicators, they work fine but after 10 seconds or so start speeding up dramatically! Pretty sure it's a faulty flasher unit but I'll check in more detail tomorrow.

Did you change the polarity of the car? That will make early fuel gauges read reverse action, but no effect on the later black gauge.

Exactly the same as my fuel gauge problem and I have a full tank

I have a later black gauge and the car was -ve earth when I got it - going to test the sender next time I'm home and see what readings it gives - I'll let you know when I sort it! On another note, can anyone tell me where the heater fan gets it's power from? I have an feeling that it's the wiper switch...

Fuel gauge now sorted - turns out it was a bad earth from the sender to the tank, rectified by running a wire from one of the screws to the earth point for the rear lights!
