Fitting rear wings
I have removed the rear wings on my Morris as they were suffering from tin rot.I managed to find two good ones and I am in the process of respraying them. When they are refitted is it usual to use a sealer ,such as Tiger seal between the body and the wing. All the doors are off and I have found two replacements along with a good boot lid.All been stripped and in the process of being resprayed.
Re: Fitting rear wings
You don't need to use a sealant - just fit the wing piping: http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/adv ... ng&x=7&y=6

Thanks I didn`t know ,if they needed to be sealed so no dirt could get thrown up into the joint Len
Re: Fitting rear wings
Before closing the joint I coat all the metal surfaces with Waxoyl

Re: Fitting rear wings
Morning all,
Yes, I used a sealer when I put everything back together. I like you was concerned about moisture in the joints. I went for a black bitumen type gutter seal. The stuff that never hardens. I thought it better than a silicone sealer. I put plenty on in both gaps ie between the piping and the body and the piping and the wing. It went everywhere when it squeezed out when tightening up the wing bolts but a wooden spatula so's not to damage the paintwork soon got rid of most and then a petrol soaked rag did the rest. Under the wing, I just used my finger to make a smooth fillet and tidy it up. I greased the threads of the bolts too when I put them in on the hope they would come out easily too in the future. I finished off smearing the surplus mastic around the heads of them to keep out any moisture by that route. Perhaps its not the concourse look but its been no problem for me.
Hope this helps.

That worked for me,Colin. And after a few years, when the sealant weeped a bit, another petrol soaked rag sorted it out.

Re: Fitting rear wings
Sorry, Its a while ago now. I've just been and looked if I had any left but I've used it all up. From memory I got it from our local branch of Wickes but I guess any "proper" builder's merchant would do. The B&Q/Homebase's seem to be more "pretty" DIY rather than "get your hands "dirty DIY.
Looking on Ebay, "Everbuild" seems to ring a bell. I think basically anything that's gloopy, sticks to everything (including your fingers) and never dries out will be fine.
Cheers, Colin.
PS My Morris is black so maybe it was easier for me. Less petrol soaked rags?

Re: Fitting rear wings
Hi,
I, in the long distant past, have successfully used "No Nonsense" Roof and Gutter sealant from B&Q at about 4 quid a tube. You will need a sealant gun, again from B&Q about £1.50.
I used it on the wings, wing piping and when I replaced the fuel tank. It cured a long standing water leakage problem in the boot caused by very old and rotten sealant around the tank rim.
I also used it to help seal the new screen rubbers on our series 2 split screen.
I doesn't dry out and it's very versatile. I did actually use a little on a leaking gutter on my house!!!
Of course, you'll still need you petrol soaked rag if your Morris is anything other that Black!!
Best Regards
