New owner - New subscriber question .... be gentle with me
Have read Mike's at http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f= ... er#p435361 and early days for us in getting my daughters new ? car up to MOT (UK) or our NZ (VIN) standard. It's an early 1957 split screen Export 4 door car plate No. is 416311. A few things need attention but one of which is the wipers. (Not working) ... Car has trafficators and all electrics working but on reading posts I will recheck brake lights are operating. Question relating to previous post by Mike is to confirm the wiper motor is on the driver side under the dash behind the instrument panel , and two - Location of the fuse ?. I haven't started on the wiper problem yet so where/what steps to start ? ...The battery was purchased last week so all good.
Two fuses on the engine bulkhead -clean the contacts and the fuses. Does anything work on the 'Ign' controlled circuit? ie Brake lights/trafficators or flashers/fuel gauge? If yes - then remove the wiper arms and dribble a little oil down the wheelbox spindles - do they seem 'free' enough?
Thanks.cleaned contacts of fuses (I thought there might be one elsewhere) and checked both spare fuses. Swapped with spares just in case and rechecked. Fuel gauge brake lights and trafficators work fine ..only two things not working are instrument panel lights and wipers. Will try and lubricate wiper spindles..
Have you witched on the IP lights ? With the wipers -well - either they are seized - or there is a power problem to the motor -or the motor is needing attention. I assume the switch is working ok?

What BMC means is, "have you used the slider switch located under the dash in line with the speedo"?
This switches the panel lights on and off (only operational is the main light switch is also on).

Ah .. thanks GT...no did not check underdash switch .. wasn't aware of (DUH ! ). I will recheck and confirm. So all that is left is the wipers.- Just out of interest (or not ) the car still has vehicle road registration and fitness certification stickers on the windscreen last dated 1992 (MOT I guess in UK). It has been garaged for over 20 years .... pleasingly nothing at all has been altered or butchered - all original. Therefore possibly and hopefully the wipers will prove to be a lack-of-use issue.
It's just a pity the motor is so difficult to get at. Check the switch - which should 'earth' the return from the motor - so that the motor can run on and self park the blades.
The wiper motors on the split screens do NOT self park - you have to be quick and nimble to stop them at the bottom of the screens! The last UK split screens were produced in September 1956, with the October production being the new one-piece curved screen models, although the wipers were still "clap-hands".
The wiper motor was moved to a special "shelf" fitting on the bulk-head in the engine bay (and out from behind the dash board), with a "self park" switching mechanism - this was carried on until the end of production.

So in our early-model 1957 split-screen where exactly do I get to - to check the wiper motor ? ... any photos might help ...
Here's the build plate .... it has the oil-bath aircleaner as on export models. ( I found out late)

Wiper motor is located inside the car, behind the drivers dash board, tucked into the right towards the pillar - see red arrow in picture below[frame][/frame]
You will have to take out the glove-box liner.

Ahh - I did wonder about the self park on these early cars -even as I typed it. So maybe the switch on these is on the live feed -and not on the earth return?
