Fitting wing mirrors to a Minor Convertible

Post by alandorman »

Hi
Can anyone suggest the least intrusive type of wing mirrors to fit to. 1961 Morris Minor Convertible? It came with the small ones which you screw to the upper front door frames. The trouble is that they fall off at irregular intervals, causing mayhem on the road behind! I don't want to spoil the look of the car by fitting them to the wings.
Cheers

The frame mirrors are hopeless - just fit proper 'wing' mirrors which were the standard accessory fitment back in the day anyway. About 12" back from the headlight is normal.

Stop boasting Roy, bet you say that to all the girls!

7" standard I think(?)
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

So are you wanting wing mirrors (which fit to the wings) or door mirrors (which fit to the doors)?? Your question doesn't seem very clear :-?

If you don't want to fit to the wings buy the ones that bolt into the triangular door frame plate.[frame]Image[/frame]

Personally I prefer door mirrors fitted to the corner plate as above two advantages unlike wing mounted mirrors you can actually see in them. And you don't have to drill your wings in the event you want rid of them just replace the corner plate. I wish the previous owner of mine hadn't bothered fitting the ones on my wings.

Each to his own and I know a lot of folk don't like the "clamp on" door mirrors but i have a convertible with both factory standard wing mirrors which I find hopeless and also clamp ons door frame mirrors ......I prefer the clamp ons and find them very useful. But as I said , each to his own. :D

The only problem I find with my clamp on mirror is it is too easily moved, other than that it works well for me.

In the last eight years that I have put the clamp on mirrors on they have neither moved or fallen off to date so I must be one of the lucky ones I guess. :D

But there aren't any wing mirrors showing in the photo...

Interesting comment earlier about drilling the corner plate on the door rather than the wing as it was easier to replacec if the mirror was not wanted. My only comment to that is that new wings are available, whereas I'm not aware of anyone manufacturing the corner plates.

For those who do want to fit wing mirrors, i agree that 7 inches back from the front edge is pretty well standard.

As above, each to their own, and if everyone is happy, then all well and good.

But there are mirrors on the doors, and I suspect the OP was referring to those as wing mirrors, a term which to be fair, a lot of us use to mean external mirrors in general, whether mounted on the wing or the door, even if it isn't strictly correct

Yes, thanks for pointing out. Difficult to know quite what to call the mirrors. They are actually wing mirrors which have been fitted to the front of the doors as in this photo. In any case they are a huge improvement on the ones originally screwed to the edge of the doors, and personally I think they look better than the ones attached to the wings. But thanks everyone for your input.
