Due to being a novice ! can l please ask you for help ? had a noise appear the other day - which got louder when warmed up - did the screwdriver listening test found here on a post and seems to be the water pump !
Cant find a grease nipple as someone said may be there - so have ordered a new water pump OE - am going to have a go at it is there any obvious pit falls l should be looking for ? seems I'm to remove dynamo - rad - fan blades and cover - then seems straight forward ? have tried to slacken off the rad tap - seems a bit reluctant so assume just removing bottom hose will do ? will then back flush radiator as advised on a previous post l found !
Are you sure it's the pump? Easy test - pull the fan belt off - is the noise still there? If you decide to go ahead DO NOT touch the rad drain - it may snap off... Just pull the hoses off the pump - and no need to remove the dynamo - just the top front mount bolt and slacken the other. I advise a new bypass hos too while in there and NOT the concertina type.....
No I haven't took fan belt off ! noise appeared - but got louder after a run ( not ever so noisy - but does sound like a bearing noise ) had it tuned a few weeks ago and the mechanic did warn me that he thought he d heard a noise from the water pump area - so using a wooden handled screw driver - listened to dynamo area - just the whirring noise expected - but on the water pump area a rumbling sound - but will remove the belt tomorrow - presume then that if the noise as disappeared when engine running it will point to the pump ? and yes have given up the idea of using the drain tap - thanks for reply
Today s update ! took the belt off - and noise had gone ! so attacked the job followed suggestions and all seemed ok ! when the pump came out it does seem to have a slight play in the shaft - don't know whether it s usual but the fan was quite corroded - so Sun/Mon will try the re-build - have done a back flush on the radiator - cleaned all bolts etc up - just wondering now if you suggest fitting the new gkt with grease or gasket paste ? only l suspect that its going to be a little fiddly refitting the pump and trying to get the small hose on at the same time ! the rest seems pretty simple now Phew !
Definitely NO nasty gasket goo! Nice clean surfaces and a light wipe of grease on the gasket. It will go back together easily enough. Just check the pump can spin easily when fitted - in case you have been sent the later pump with larger impeller.
Thanks Bmc ! have ordered the OE replacement rather than non genuine so assumed that it would be correct ? picking it up tomorrow - is it a visible difference ? as l assume l would notice before fitting by checking against old one ? just imagined the gkt moving whilst trying to fit pump and get hose on at the same time ? or if l fit the pump is the hose still reasonably easy to bend and fit ? am not refitting flex one as per your previous post !
Thanks very much for your help - just wish l lived nearer to you
The gasket will not move as it will be located by the two water pump locating dowels.
The more solid bypass hose will fit easily as you fit the pump.
As above grease the gasket before fitting.
If you have the OE water pump there will be no problems re clearances of the impellor. Only on the 850cc/997cc engines is the depth of the impellor a possible consideration.
With later water pumps the depth of the impellor - that is from water pump gasket face to the back of the impellor = 14mm.

will check those sizes thanks and l was thinking that l was going to fit the gkt to the water pump - hence it moving whilst putting into place and trying to fit hose sorry a novice had another look and yes fit gkt to block face - over the dowels
Thanks for all advice given ! have fitted new pump successfully - and after having to re - adjust that little by-pass hose seems now to have no leaks !
During process have managed to break the rad cap - could do with getting one tomorrow from a local factors - don't suppose you know the part number needed ? seems to me that its a GRC103 4LB - looking at E Bay
Thanks BMC - did just that but made a mistake they cross referenced it - etc it looked right - same writing on the cap etc but when fitting the two lugs that fit to twist it on are slightly larger - hence not really keen at trying to cut them down a little - as it obviously is the wrong one - so l am returning tomorrow and just thought if l had a number to quote them ? have looked on Charles ware page but nothing readable but thanks anyway
The only real difference normally is 'long' and 'short' caps (as well as pressure differences). Don't go for stupidly high pressure... If there is little in it - just file the lugs on cap - and/or rad.
Been to three factors today - the problem is that to match my cap - l will end up with a 15 lb cap - which according to the topics l have read isn't advised - yet l have had the car three years and had no problem ! have managed to get a 4 lb pressure cap now that fits - also a 15lb cap that fits - so have fitted the 4lb one tonight and will take her a run tomorrow morning ( cos it s bucketing down at present here ) it seems that you recommend a 4 lb too ! so what's good enough for you will do me
