Engine oil leaking on to clutch

Post by chris1968 »

Just had a 300 mile trip and used two gallons of oil, with the clutch slipping.I did clean the breather pipes from the crank and rocker cover and oil cap before I left .

Oh dear - that's a LOT! Usual test then - hot engine, oil filler cap off and rev up - is there a plume of smoke/fume? Other possibility is - are you overfilling the sump? Maybe the wrong dipstick is fitted. The clutch plate unfortunately will not recover if it's soaked in oil so will need changing. But check the slipping is due to oil (ie is it dripping out the jiggle pin) or is just needing adjustment - should be ~ 1" free play at the pedal.

Unfortunately I changed the clutch because it was slipping last month.l thought at the time it looked as if it was contaminated and came to the conclusion it was slipping because it was on the rivets.I will go and warm up the engine and let you know.

What an idiot I feel so stupid. It was the rocker cover gasket,I've only got about ten spare ones sitting on the shelf.

Well - you should glue (not gasket goo..) the new gasket to the cover - and don't overtighten. But doesn't explain how that oil could get on the clutch to make it slip. Check the adjustment...
