spanner size 1958 propshaft nuts and bolts

Can anyone tell me the correct spanner size for the propshaft nuts and bolts on a 1958 traveller.I have tried a 9/16 af and 14 mm but both are a touch too big,could they be whitworth? I would have guessed 9/16 was about right but it doesn't feel right,I am thinking of knuckle damage !!

The thread size chart at the beginning of the Mechanical section says bolts/nuts are 1/4 Whit / 5/16BSF

Just to be clear on BSF (BS Fine) and BSW (BS Whitworth) thread and spanner sizes.

The prop shaft bolts are 5/16" diameter with a BSF thread. The bolt head size is also used for 1/4" BSW bolts - BSW originally used a 'one size' larger head size than BSF, which is why a BSF/BSW spanner often shows two bolt sizes for the same spanner, but it can cause misinterpretation of what the actual bolt diameter is.

The table at the beginning of the 'Mechanical' section that is now a 'sticky', shows the bolt thread size and type separately from the spanner size.

As I remember a thin headed spanner is needed here too - to grip the bolt heads. This is a rather unusual use of BSF bolts since it is on the transmission - where everything else uses UNF threaded parts - since they were originally sourced from the 'Austin' parts bin. Generally on a Minor - the body parts are BSF and power unit/transmission is UNF (and perhaps UNC in some places).

Depends on your age. I started my working life when there were still applications of BSF/BSW, moved through UNF/UNC and now usually metric. Doesn't seem too bad when you do it at a gentle pace!

Series MM engines have metric threads with Whitworth nut and spanner heads

There is a trend nowadays to produce Minor parts with UNF threads instead of the Whitworth /BSF ones used originally.
