LED BULBS

Hi all I am new to Morris minor family, Just got hold of a 1957 moggy convertible (nice to have brakes) to keep
my 2 Austin 7 specials company
Which i am thinking of fitting LED bulbs Is there any issues ? Also want to fit rear seat
belts (grand kids) Do thy make a belt to fit the moggy or is it universal type belt need for the job
And can it be a big job

Not heard of any issues with replacement LED bulbs and it's something i'm looking into myself. All i've seen so far is obviously they lower the current draw on the wiring which is a good thing. I think all the major moggy parts suppliers have seat belts for every and any occasion ! My 2 door has had inertia reel belts fitted in the back.

LEDs won't work with many 'flashers' - but your car probably doesn't have them anyway. The power saving is tiny - why bother?

The one and only time they help is when you sit stationary with your foot on the brake. Both brake lights on with the generator not giving enough charge at tickover will drain the battery in the winter. I have heard they are good in trafficators too, the flashing type.

But then - you should never sit with foot on brake pedal - blinding the driver behind.....

Yes, I know you shouldn't but most do unfortunately and with our older cars the flat battery syndrome happens :lol: :lol: :lol:

I was lent a new volvoV60 whilst ours was serviced and it had this stop start thing where the engine stops when at traffic lights when you stand on the brake pedal. Most annoying when you are behind one of these things as they do tend to blind you as they are so bright. :o

I looked at LED bulbs a couple of years ago but advice then was they were no brighter and perhaps less bright than standard bulbs.

I changed to halogen rear bulbs when I had a duff bulb. Don't know if they have helped someone see me better or not but do appear brighter.

I'd give them a try, especially in the trafficators I think the fact that they run much cooler than incandescents could help with longevity for the plastic.

As for brake lights they may or may not be brighter but they'll definitely respond faster. In a car with a dynamo with the wipers and headlights on a normal incandescent might take a little time (I'm talking maybe 1/4 of a second so nothing drastic) to heat the filament while LEDs would be instant. They should last longer so less worries about having a dead bulb.

That said I'm quite happy with the good old regular bulbs in my car, if you try LEDs make sure they are good quality and I'm sure you'll be very happy with them.

The following experience is from customising my motorbike but the same should apply:

You will probably need to either change flasher relay, wire in resistors or a hidden incandescent bulb for LED flasher bulbs to work without flashing very rapidly (MOT failure) due to the decreased resistance. (I changed the flasher relay on my bike).

LED tail / stop light bulbs will work fine.

Direct replacement plug-ins are easy & are multi-cluster LEDs, which have the great advantage of meaning that even if one or more LEDs give out, the rest continue working, meaning you still have lights!
THAT is the great advantage of LED bulbs.

As soon as I get some spare time & cash I will be doing the LED swap myself..! :D

Best one to change to LED is the interior lamp. Then the fitting doesn't overheat and distort when you leave a door open for a while. Front side lights are no problem but I have found combined stop and tail lamps are less successful. The rear side light is brighter but the stop is not so bright and the difference is not great so I didn't change those. I tried 3 or 4 different makes and types.

Reference seat belts, the standard none inertia type were easy enough to fit.

I added LED bulbs to my Speedo, I must admit the 4000k ones set it off quite niceley :)[frame]Image[/frame]

I like that what type and where did you get the bulbs from ?
