Wiper motor burnt out?!?!?!?!!!

Post by ExMODtraveller »

Hi I think my wiper motor has burnt out as the drive cable seized and it could not rotate. The motor just got really hot and now it doesn't work at all. I have tested it for power and there is definitely power going to the motor.

Can I just replace the brushes and it will work again???
Or
Can I fit a wiper motor out of a classic mini??

I'm also after 2 wiper wheels and all fittings, thanks.

Sounds like it's fried....BUT test to be sure. Battery negative cable disconnected .Mark the wires and remove from wiper.
Check the continuity with your Multimeter set to Ohms. Probe / clip the red and black cables to the terminals. You should get
a reading of 7 to 10 Ohms resistance. No reading at all = game over , replacement required.
Your options 1.buy a reconditioned unit * 2 Have your unit reconditioned 3 Buy another second hand unit , having inspected it and done the resistance test, what state are the brushes in ( you can buy new brushes ) and refurbish it yourself.

* keep hold of the gearwheel and shaft, these are not supplied sometimes when exchanging ,Check carefully with the Supplier.Morris gear wheel is 120 degrees sweep whereas a Mini is 110 degrees. Both use a Lucas DR3A wiper motor so you could swop out the parts to make a good'un.

Cable / Wheel box replacement ? The usual trouble is simply old grease that has gone hard. The fix is to strip down , thoroughly clean , re grease with new grease and re-assemble.
However , if there is significant wear then new parts may be required. The cogs on the wheel boxes can be rotated through 180 degrees so that a fresh part of the metal wheel contacts the cable. You can sometimes buy second hand wiper cable and wheel boxes from people like ESM.

Test and then formulate you game plan.

There is always power to it - unless the fuse blows. The switch earths it out. Unlikely new brushes will fix it, but you never know. It's probably burned out one or more segments in the commutator/ rotor Disconnect the seized rack and give it a go! The wheel boxes can sometimes be saved by dribbling a little oil down the spindle - and some new grease on the rack will do no harm.
