Morris 1000 stalling

When I bought my Morris 1000 off the previous owner,he said thet sometimes on a run and the car was warm it would stall.Having no knowledge about classic cars,he left the car for 20 minutes and it was OK.I have spent a year restoring the car and never had the chance to try it out when I bought is,as the clutch was faulty.However I took it for a MOT yesterday and sure enough after about 3 milesit stalled.I tried for a spark and nothing,so I removed the dist.cap and "flicked "the points open with my finger and received a shock.Putting the cap back on the car ran.When it happened a second time ,on the way home I took the cap off again and though the contacts were closed,if I put a screwdriver across them,and there was a spark.I havn`t had this before,so the surface of the points must be quite bad.I have bought new points and a capacitor,which I will change today.I often wondered while restoring the car what the trouble may be and thankfully I found it.I had checked the gap on the points a while ago,but without removing them you cannot see the surface.I can now sell the car with confidence.Len

Hope you bought 'quality' items (ie from Distributor Doctor) - and not the cr@p made in tin huts in far away places........ And did it pass the MOT ?

I bought Lucas parts when I returned home.Going for the MOT,I parked in the garage forecourt,it stalled once on the way there.But when the inspector called me in,it wouldn`t start,so we both looked at it and decided it was the points.We cleaned them,by rubbing emery cloth between the points and it was OK.But it stalled twice on the way home ,both times I cleaned the points the same way and it got me going again .It was when the points were closed and yet putting a screwdriver across them ,it sparked ,very unusual .Anyway it is now for sale with an MOT . The inspector remarked how solid it was underneath and how good the Trunnions were.Get it sold and look around for my next project.Possibly a convertable ,I was offered anothe rpriject ,but I can`t make a move until this is sold Len

If it is sparking across the points it is usually an indication of condense failure. As Roy pointed out earlier the branded "Lucas" ones are rubbish.
Buy a Yellow wire one from Distributor Doctor or you can also get them from ESM.

best to get it running right before you sell it... then you will get no grief

The engine has only done a genuine 58000 and sounds superb.The Ibs reading on all the cylinders is also excellent

I suspect the 'gap' has actually been slightly too large - and on maybe one flat of the cam they were barely touching. It's the only explanation I can think of where you would get a spark with a screwdriver - even when the points are 'closed'. This of course is after you had cleaned the points - if they are badly corroded then perhaps it's just intermittent loss of good contact. Indeed -the so branded 'Lucas' parts are useless......
