Carburettor problem? Ignition Problem???

Hi I have recently had to take the carb off the traveller to unblock it as it had 'jelly like' deposits blocking it up. After putting it back on the engine tries to spark but doesn't properly and when I press the throttle pedal it doesn't give the car any power??
So the battery dies instantly.
Advice would be helpful, thanks.

All very confusing - why would the battery fail??? Is the carb piston rising and falling easily? Try tipping an egg-cup of fuel into the carb mouth - and crank it. Does it run -at least for a few seconds?

It runs fow a few seconds but won't idle. The battery dies because of trying to start it so many times.

Good - So it's not an ignition problem.. Carb piston ??? And why did you suspect a jelly substance?? Is the fuel pump ticking ok ?

Did you replace the oil in the carb dashpot? Lack of oil there will give running problems.........

The piston needs to rise and fall before worrying about oil....and we don't have an answer to that yet....

My 1000 with the hs2 carb did this car had been sat for a good while the fuel degraded and the resulting sludge which looked like yellow Vaseline congregated in the bottom of the float bowl after cleaning that out it still kept spluttering to a halt turned out a lump of it was blocking the small pipe from the float bowl to the jet cleaned that problem solved.

Your answers are always evasive -and never really answering the specific question asked... Is there a reason for that? Has the engine stopped 'sparking' now ?? (where were the sparks coming from?) Is the carb piston now rising/ falling easily? And have you put a bit of oil in it? You need to get it started first - and up to running temperature. Will it do that?

I've tried to get it going again today and it ran for a few mins then it cut out. Two of the spark plugs keep turning black and it struggles to idle.

As above -1342 anticlockwise. Still no news on the carb piston.......

Ok. How freely should the carb piston move??

With the damper removed it should slide up easily with a finger - and fall back with a clunk as it lands on the bridge.

Hi so I started it up today and it ran for a good 15mins then cut out because it ran out of petrol. I think it is running too rich cos the spark plugs keep turning black.

You really need to take it for a run to check the colour of the plugs, the plugs will show rich just idling.

Ahh right okay well I will try again tomorrow. I can't take it for a run as it has no mot yet.

Is the 'choke' going off completely? And the piston now rises and falls correctly?
