HELP NEEDED - 1954 Morris Minor saloon

Post by Minibluemoo123 »

We have recently inherited a Morris Minor - split screen - 4 door - 800cc- light grey in colour. She has been in dry storage for approx 10 years, body work generally in good condition, small amount of welding needed, but she does start.
Looking for some guidance as to how much we should ask for the car if we decide to sell.

Honestly, there are so many variables - including whereabouts you are in the country. I honestly think nowadays that the best way to find out what something is worth and get a fair price if you have to sell it, is to put it on an ebay auction with a 99p starting price and no reserve. Plenty of clear photographs and a clear description with an invitation to people to come and view.
It will sell for its value.
Alternatively some photos, a rough location and further description on here or contact a local branch of the club or local dealer/specialist and hope somebody can come and see it? Very hard to value anything without seeing it. Probably anything from a few hundred upto a thousand or so very roughly?
The "car and classic" website also works very well for selling older cars.

Good luck :)

If you post some photos it could help. These cars can easily become a money pit so folk need to see what they might be buying. Advice on here is free. Good advice from manyminors!

Here goes - I'll give it a go. This is for a Splitscreen 2 or 4dr.

Totally rotten and has been stored outside with ripped interior - £200 to £500 depending how good your ebay photos are and if its advertised correctly. I've seen complete cars advertised in the wrong section on ebay i.e literature / manuals or even gloveboxes and they only fetch half the value.

A complete car, no bits missing, not too rusty and savable - £500 to £1200 depending on condition. If it has the earlier Cheesegrator grill (rather than the 1000 style horizontal slates) and it still has the chrome windscreen trims intact, I've seen these go for upto £1500.

MOT'd cars in average condition (mayby abit of exterior rust or interior ripped or non/original) £2000 to £3500.

Very clean cars not needing any work, nicley looked after and all the original features £3500 upwards.

Concours £5000 upwards.

Obviously some smart alec will be on saying a Split Screen doesn't need an MOT but its a useful measure of roadworthyness when selling or buying. Having the earlier cheesegrater version and the original interior can make £500 differance in value.

Unless your car is concours, I don't think engine originality is a massive factor to the value, some insist it must have the 803 early engine but one thats modified with the later 1000 engines are also very desirable as they are more usable on a daily basis.

Somebody else mentioned about location being a factor - I've seen cars in Scotland & Norfolk sell for peanuts but Cornwall / Devon doesn't seem to be that effected - must be alot of Minor fans in that corner of the country.

Good Luck and get some pictures on here first, one of us may buy it - & don't forget your location (or at least get your wheelbin in shot - that can give a good clue !!)

And, if by some mircal you've inherited a Split Screen Traveller or Van/Pick up, you can triple all the prices above.
