Sump Gaskets

I have just received a set of sump gaskets from ESM trying to sort out an oil leak. However the cork gaskets for

the ends of the sump seem too wide. They fit into the groove so the depth is OK but measure 10mm wide

which seems excessive when matched up to the engine. I don't want to put the sump back on to find I have an

even bigger oil leak. Can anyone confirm that the 10mm width is OK. Andy

Are you sure that you are fitting them the right way round - the long side should go into the groove.

Yes I am fitting the long side into the groove but the cork seems to be very wide. ( 10 mm ). The Moss one

shown looks as though its the correct size so may have to order another set from them. Andy

Use the rubber ones-much better than cork.

Can you please clarify what you mean by the wide side?
If it fits into the slot are you referring to the vertical side of the cork seal (packing) as the wide side
The sump gasket in question has to stand well proud of the lips either side of the cork seal otherwise it will not seal. The seal is made by the compression of the cork seal.
Make sure that the cork seal does not end up like the one in the picture AA27 attached.[frame][/frame]

I always use the cork seal/packing and have never had any problems.
The cork seal/packing though is well greased before fitting which allows it to centralise in the groove.

Yes I am referring to the vertical (packing) side as the wide side. But as you point out and as I now understand this needs to be wide enough to give a good seal. Thanks for the Workshop Manual diagram and details. I will

10mm sounds about right to me - they should be soaked in oil overnight before fitting. And cork is perfectly satisfactory for these seals if fitted correctly No need to go for rubber.

Quite the opposite with me-I could never get the cork seals to work. I had the sump off about six times and they always leaked. The rubber ones worked straight off and I never had a problem since.

Here's the source for the rubber seals. They need to be cut back slightly with a hacksaw (metal reinforcing ring inside)
