Head stud washers?
I have changed the head gasket on my 1967 Minor engine. One of the studs under the rocker cover had a spring washer rather than a plain washer on it, and another had no washers except the locking tab on the front most pedestal; both instances I imagine are wrong. Do the four head studs under the rocker cover all need plain washers?

You should have at least:-
qty 1 of item No: 29. (you may have qty 4 fitted dependent upon engine number)
qty 4 of item No: 65.
qty 4 of item No: 66.
qty 4 of item No: 67.

Thanks, I am talking about the head studs under the rocker cover, not the pedestal studs. Should there be washers (no.100) under both long and short head studs? And another thing occured tom me. I had an engine steady fitted, should there be a washer or a spring washer under that rear outer corner stud?

Over the years I have seen just about every combination of washer on head studs and they all seem to work. My rule is that if the nut on the stud has a kind of built-in washer, that is a very wide circular base tapering in to the hexagonal part, then a washer is not essential (but still fitted if available). If it is a plain hexagonal nut then it should have a plain washer underneath it. The bracket for the engine steady bar goes against the head, then a plain washer on top of the bracket with the nut on top of that. Head studs do not have spring washers. Pedastal studs have plain and spring washers.

The later 'flanged' nuts should not have washers fitted. All the head studs should have washers - but note these should be 'hard' washers - if soft washers are used they can 'collapse' under the compression of the nut when torqued up to 42 ft lbf. Speciual Tuning used to sell thicker washers for Comp use - but I guess these are hard to find now ! The steady should have a slightly longer stud - and ideally a washer and nut fitted as normal - then the steady bracket on top followed by another securing washer and nut.
