Were Gold/Silver engines remanufactured by BMC/BL et al

Post by iconic »

Or put out to sub contract?

If BMC/BL did them where did they do them.....one would of thought at the original engine factory....which then makes me think were the engines made in one factory or built from products from multiple factories?

RKM's were factory exchanges/re-conds.

Have to check list for others....
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

Gold Seal being a 'drop in' engine, a full recon' (with starter, dizzy and alternator) and Silver Seal a short engine only no acilleries being just the block?

But somewhere my poor memory tells me that engines that were no longer in production were only ever Silver Seal with a higher proportion of used but servicable parts?

I also seem to remember that every decent or dodgy engine recon' companies painted their engines Gold, which must of muddied the waters somewhat? Our local recon' companies when I lived in Medway back in 70's both painted their engines Gold and sold some shocking recon's and did some eye opening engine work, both of which are now gone as engine engineers.
LCP refaced and fitted new valve guides to a TR7 head for me and managed to put a semi-circular 2mm depression across number 2 and 3 by clamping the head over a washer on the machine bed, this was after they had refaced so the head was scrap after their expertise :o .
Whilst Automania had a nasty habit of steam cleaning old engines, spraying them Gold and fitting a new set of rings and shells, & then send it out and hope for the best with a 3 month 'nothing covered' warranty...the bad old days of recon engines, but then those engines were cheap and people didn't want to pay the money for a decent engine I suppose...no change there then?

As a sidenote puka Ford main dealer exchange engines were a light green back in the 80's and came with a special running-in fluid..it wasn't called oil per se.

....Just a had a bath and had an idle think as you do (or I do) and remember that Unipart handled the exchange engine system back in the 70's (or the logistics of) but wasn't Unipart was only started as company from the mid 70s 'ish?
